As summer draws to an end and the cooler nights and shorter days of Autumn begin we see a change in seasonal crops. More generally September and October are great months for local fresh produce and produce in general with the overlap of seasons.

We will see local leafy salads and baby leaves continue through until the first frosts in October and the same with our local Norfolk Strawberries and Raspberries. On top of this we now have many local root vegetable crops coming into main season such as Carrots/Parsnips/Celeriac/Leeks as well as those from other UK destinations such as Turnips and Swede from Scotland.  Also local main crop onions, red onions, shallots and potatoes are all becoming available as harvests get underway. We will be starting our locally grown ‘Norfolk Pink’ Red Stemster Potatoes and all of our prepared potatoes for roast and mash will be made out of these over the winter months.

Other specific heritage potatoes such as Pink Fir Apple and Ratte are also available now to order.

Other seasonal and local vegetables Broccoli, Tenderstem Broccoli, cauliflower  and Red, White, Savoy and Pointed cabbages as well as Black Cabbage (Cavelo Nero) and kale with Rainbow and Swiss Chard also coming into their own now.

Alongside all this local produce other items such as Coloured Heritage Beetroots, Chantenay carrots,  baby vegetables, Jerusalem Artichokes, Salsify, fresh Horseradish and Romanesque are all in season now.

Autumn traditionally sees the start of the pumpkin, squash and Ghord season and we will have many varieties too numerous to list available locally from now until the New Year- Please ask for availabilities and a list.

Foraged produce such as Damsons,  Sloes and wild sea vegetables are all becoming abundant now with Wild Mushrooms beginning their Autumn flush – Ceps,  Girolles, Trompette, Pied De Mouton and Chanterelles should all be available over the next month or two ( dependant on weather)  Call us for daily prices and availabilities.

Autumn also sees the start of the local topfruit season with local apple and pears now becoming available – Coxes, Bramley and Conference pears will all be available from our local orchards.

Best in Season

Turkish Black Figs – season now started and will last for approx 6-8 weeks- fantastic large plump black figs!!

Finished for while

Cherries – just about finished now with last of the Canadian crop. Other Stone Fruits such as peaches and nectarines are also coming to an end and Spanish Melons will be replaced by Southern Hemisphere fruit.

Fresh Peas, Broad Beans and Runner Beans are also coming to an end until next spring.


Citrus fruits have been difficult and relatively expensive for a while with a general world shortage.  This situation is likely to continue for a while until the Spanish main season begins in November – This is affecting particularly small sized oranges and lemons but all other citrus fruits are generally expensive compared to other years.

Aspargaus is now air freighted from South America with Fine beans, mangetout, sugarsnaps and Baby Corn all air freighted from Africa and Asia – With the lack of flights due to Covid 19 air freight rates have increased significantly making these products more expensive than normal.
