Autumn, a new season of produce from Accent Fresh…..

October 7th, 2014 by

Autumn produce is starting in full swing, with a warm and dry month in September; we are welcoming in new crops nice and early. This year offers great conditions for harvesting local top fruit and root vegetables. Here’s our run down of to expect from Octobers’ produce….

It’s that time of year when the fresh, crisp Autumn chill creeps in. So make the most of our fresh Autumn veg for warming soups and seasonal comfort food!

We’re kicking it off with a promotion on Tenderstem Broccoli throughout October with 4 packs of 500g at £13.95. With little to no wastage, a long shelf life, and that wonderful flavour it’s one of our Autumn favourites!

AsparagusWhat’s new….

All our Beetroot is local new crop, and we’ve got great variety with Red, Candy, Gold and White all available. We now also carry Beetroot juice by ‘James White’ in 75cl bottles.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli will be coming in any time, as the weather cools. Other colourful items coming in are local Romanescu & coloured Cauliflowers – available until hard frosts kick in.

We have 20 varieties of local Squashes and Pumpkins now available from our local grower. Some will always be on stock, but for the weird and wonderful, call us, or email for a full list.

If you’re looking for something different in a Potato, Heritage varieties Ratte, Violette (Purple), Pink Fir Apple, and Anya are all now available.

Items now in main crop are standard Carrots, which are all local. We are also carrying English mixed Rainbow Carrots, and small Chantenays as stock items. It’s main season for Swede, Parsnip, Leeks & Celeriac which are all great products for quality and value. Also available are Parsley Root, Fennel, Salsify, Fresh Horseradish, local Purple & Green Kohl Rabi, and Turnips. Leaves still going strong are Kale, Rainbow & Swiss Chards, Spinach and leafy Fenland Celery. Standard Cauliflower and Broccoli are always available too. The UK Potato harvest is now in full swing and all good as far as size, quality and volume which means prices will remain stable into next spring.

Mushrooms On the way out…are local Baby Vegetables, but these will remain on stock with supply from outside of the UK. Most Fresh Peas and Beans from the UK have also finished, but Fine Beans, Mange tout and Sugar snaps will run year round from overseas.

Now is the time for Mushrooms. Wild Mushrooms from Europe, and locally flourish in late Summer/Autumn. And again the warm, and sometimes wet weather we’ve been having means availability is good. In season at the minute are Trompettes De Mort, Pied De Mouton and Yellow or Grey Chanterelles. Girolles are also available and of a reliable standard at this time of year. We do ask that you check with us for prices and availability, as our stock can vary with these.

Dimage2on’t miss out on Turkish Black Figs which are looking great but will be finishing at the end of the month with only a short season. New crop Bramley Apples are looking great and crying out to be wrapped up in warming pies. Local Apples (Lord Lambourn, Perfection, Cox and Russets) look set to be going strong until the end of the year. Local Conference Pears are now in, and will be held on stock. Also available until the end of the year or so, are Quince, but when these finish, Quince jelly/paste is always available in 900g blocks.

On the way out are local Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries and Blackberries, to be replaced by imported products. European Peaches, Nectarines and Apricots have also finished, and our go-to stone fruit of the moment is the Plum. Coming to us from Italy & France, plums are looking great at the moment. Citrus fruits are moving onto new crop imported, so you can expect to see improvements in both price and quality over this month. Lemons and Satsumas are now coming in from Spain. Oranges and Grapefruits nowcome to us from the Southern Hemisphere where the weather is now heating up.

Accent Fresh ProduceAnd finally, coming into party season, why not try adding that little something special to your dish with our Micro Leaves, Micro Veg, Shoots or Edible Flowers? These are sourced locally from Nurtured in Norfolk, and there are just
