We are well and truly into autumn now that the calendar has changed to November, and with this marks the end of the line for a lot of our favourite fruits and vegetables.
However, as always with fresh produce, as we lose some, we gain others and apart from the excellent colourings of orange, red and yellow that we are treated to, we also have great ‘comfort food’ flavours back in as well.
Due to the change in temperatures, a lot of local sourced produce has gone, including soft fruits, local grown salads and aubergines, broccoli and courgettes. We can still import from the Southern Hemisphere for now, however this will be reflected in the price. Suffolk boarder baby vegetables are also no longer available.
We also have to say farewell for now to European stone fruits, with just the plum holding strong this time of year and we are looking further afield for our figs now on the run up to Christmas, with Turkish black figs on the out and their Brazilian cousins taking their place.
Fear not though as we mentioned before, November brings with it a decadent list of excellent produce, all bursting with flavour, texture and colour.
Local squashes, gourds, crown prince pumpkins and French Muscat pumpkins are all looking great this season, as are Heritage coloured beetroots and coloured carrots, which are available in both baby and large. Swiss and Rainbow chard and the nutty flavoured Romanesca are season must haves, although they will be harder to get hold of if we get hit by hard frosts this year.
As for fruit, we have local apples and pears juicing up nicely, and firm favourites for this time of year, the Bramley Cooking apple is available, in time for baking delicious warming crumbles and pies.
And for the sweeter toothed among us, toffee and chocolate apples are available to order on request.
Other products that should be on your shopping list in November are:
- Preva Norfolk Maris Peer and Norfolk Stemster Red potatoes, which are great tasting and versatile; a real all-rounder!
- Local carrots, swede, parsnips, celeriac and savoy
- Cauliflower, spinach, green and red kale and black cabbage
- English watercress
Let’s not forget, Christmas is just around the corner and as such, we are already starting to see our seasonal favourites coming into the warehouse. Brussel sprouts and sprout tops are ready to go out and we are expecting prepared sprouts to be in and available to order from the end of November.
Fresh cranberries are now starting if you are making your own sauces or adding to stuffing’s; however we also have plenty of frozen cranberries in our freezers and delicious, dark red cranberry sauce in stock as well.
Fresh red currants, sweet figs and Medjool dates and chestnuts (fresh whole or vacuumed packed, peeled/cooked) are making us feel very festive already and the smell of juicy stocking filler satsumas, clementine’s and Spanish navel oranges will soon be filling the air as we head into December.
Wild mushrooms from Europe are still going; at least until the weather takes a cold turn and we are still able to supply Chanterelles, Girolle, Trompette, Pied de Mouton, Mousseron and Ceps (porccini)
As we stroll heartily in to winter, we do need to be mindful that all this great produce will depend heavily on the cold weather conditions in Europe, which may affect availability of outdoor crops, but if you have any concerns, a member of our team will be happy to help.
